Redmond playing games: New motherboard for Xbox 360

As the Mercury News just reports, Microsoft plans to outfit the Xbox 360 next year with a new internal motherboard code-named Jasper. The new board will have a new version of the ATI Technologies graphics chip based on a 65-nanometer manufacturing process. Currently, the graphics chip on the Xbox 360 uses a 90-nanometer process. With the new version, the graphics chip will give off less heat, be physically smaller, and cost less to produce. The new Jasper board will also have smaller memory chips.

Ultimately, Jasper will allow Microsoft to cut the price on the Xbox 360. Jasper is the successor to the board dubbed Falcon, which is inside Xbox 360s currently hitting the market. Microsoft declined to comment.
